Los Angeles County Democratic Party Congratulates
Assembly Member John A. Pérez
on Being Selected as the Next Speaker
LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles County Democratic Party (LACDP) congratulates Assembly Member John A. Pérez (D-Los Angeles) on winning the unanimous vote of the Democratic Caucus to be the next Speaker of the California State Assembly.
“I could not be more proud of John today,” said Eric C. Bauman, Chair of the Los Angeles County Democratic Party. “He has all of the qualities that make for a great Speaker: intellectual vigor, combined with keen political and tactical instincts and years of experience as an organizer and negotiator. When John becomes Speaker, the youth in our community will have an extraordinary role model, and California’s families will have a fearless champion they can count on to stand up for what is right.”
Pending a full vote of the Assembly in January, Pérez is poised to become the first openly-gay Speaker in California history. As a freshman Assembly Member ascending to the Speakership, Pérez will bring continuity and stability to the Assembly leadership for as long as five years.
A longtime champion of working families and a grassroots Democratic activist, Pérez is an elected member of the Democratic National Committee and a former Co-Chair of the LACDP Candidate Interview Committee. Since his election to the Assembly, he has served as Chair of the Assembly Democratic Caucus.
LACDP thanks Speaker Karen Bass for her extraordinary leadership during this difficult and tumultuous time. Speaker Bass’s tenacity and willingness to stand up resulted in tens and thousands of children continuing to have health care today and many Californians at greatest risk have had critical services protected. As a member of Speaker Bass’s leadership team, Pérez will be well-prepared to assume the Speakership.
