Los Angeles County Democratic Party Welcomes

Mitt Romney… And Mitt Romney… To Los Angeles

Elected officials, labor leaders, and the Los Angeles County Democratic Party unite to highlight Romney’s willingness to take both sides of every issue – bending, swaying, and flip-flopping to appeal to the right wing, especially on immigration and important issues for working families

The Los Angeles County Democratic Party (LACDP) held a press conference at the Nickel Diner on Main Street in Downtown Los Angeles with elected officials and labor leaders to welcome “Mitt and Mitt” as they flip-flop their way through Los Angeles for a high-dollar fundraiser at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

The press conference featured Eric C. Bauman, Chair of the LACDP and Vice Chair of the California Democratic Party; Eric Garcetti, Los Angeles City Council President; Jan Perry, Los Angeles City Councilmember; and Maria Elena Durazo, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO.

“On behalf of the Los Angeles County Democratic Party, we welcome Mitt Romney…and Mitt Romney… back to Los Angeles.  The truth about Romney is that he has taken virtually every side of every issue and would bend over backwards and say anything to appeal to the right wing. The only consistent thing about the Romneys is their disregard for the concerns and needs of struggling hard-working Americans,” said Eric C. Bauman, LACDP Chair and California Democratic Party Vice Chair.

Romney has flip-flopped on every major issue, from the economy to immigration.  Specifically, Romney’s flip-flop on immigration took him on a hard right turn, from being somewhat moderate, supporting sensible comprehensive immigration reform, to now advocating the most extreme and impractical proposal of all of the presidential candidates.

“The contrast between Mitt Romney and President Obama on immigration couldn’t be clearer.  Romney’s immigration stance is the most extreme of any presidential candidate.  In contrast, the President has consistently supported passage of a comprehensive immigration reform and fought for passage of the DREAM Act,” said Maria Elena Durazo, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor.

Economic recovery and job creation for average Americans are the top priority to put America back on track.  But even as Romney touts his economic plan, his failed record as governor of Massachusetts demonstrates his inability to move our economy forward.  Under Governor Romney, Massachusetts’s job creation was ranked 47 out of 50 states. And as this week’s Los Angeles Times demonstrated, during his tenure at Bain Capital, thousands of American jobs were lost and shipped overseas.

“Mitt Romney supports tax breaks for his wealthy Wall Street friends and opposes President Obama’s economic reforms that seek to protect everyday working people.  What’s more, his business experience includes laying off Americans while shipping jobs overseas and making hundreds of millions for himself.  That’s not the kind of leadership America needs,” said Eric Garcetti, Los Angeles City Council President.

“Mitt Romney’s flip-flopping is no help to the small businesses that are vital to revitalize our economy,” added Jan Perry, Los Angeles City Councilmember.  “The Mitt who once supported tax credits for small businesses to hire unemployed people is not the same Mitt who opposes President Obama’s American Jobs Act, which would provide $4,000 tax credits to business owners who hire the long-term jobless.”

“We want to remind Governor Romney: As you wine and dine with your top 1% friends at your exclusive high-dollar fundraiser in Beverly Hills this evening, the average American family on Main Street is struggling and suffering, while Wall Street makes billions.  Americans need jobs here at home.  We need someone who will stand up for the 99%, for the hard-working families who face difficult times.  That someone is not Mitt Romney,” said Maria Elena Durazo, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor.

“Americans can’t afford four years of an out-of-touch multi-millionaire who, in the face of extraordinary unemployment and economic dislocation, thinks it appropriate to joke with struggling and frightened Americans that “he too is unemployed,” said Eric C. Bauman, LACDP Chair.
