LACDP Statement on the Passing of LGBT Leader Jean Harris

Los Angeles County Democratic Party Chair and California Democratic Party Vice Chair Eric C. Bauman released the following statement on the passing of LGBT leader Jean Harris:

“The LGBT community and the greater Democratic Party family will sorely miss Jean Harris. She was the consummate political insider, yet often found herself excelling in the outsider role. Jean focused on many political causes, but she worked tirelessly on LGBT issues and was an essential part of the strategy that ultimately turned the Coachella Valley blue. Jean never hesitated to call-out the deceivers, the charlatans and the chicken-hearted, and she never acquiesced to our opponents. Her energy and fearlessness will be missed.”

Harris, 66, was a trailblazer in LGBT political advocacy in both California and Oregon.  In Oregon, she was the first Executive Director of Basic Rights Oregon.  As the Executive Director of the California Alliance for Pride and Equality (CAPE), the forerunner of Equality California (EQCA), she transformed it from a grassroots nonprofit to a powerful lobbying and advocacy organization.

As a Democratic activist, Harris served in many leadership positions, including California Democratic Party (CDP) Lesbian/Gay Caucus Chair, CDP Delegate Selection Committee Member, CDP 16th Assembly District Chair, and San Francisco’s Harvey Milk Lesbian/Gay Democratic Club.

As a political professional, she served as chief of staff to San Francisco Supervisor Harry Britt; special assistant to San Francisco Mayor Frank Jordan, Assembly Speakers Herb Wesson and Fabian Nunez; and principal consultant to Senate President pro Tem Don Perata.  Harris was instrumental in the “lavender sweep” of San Francisco in the 1990s, during which LGBT candidates Carole Migden, Tom Ammiano, Roberta Achtenberg, and Harry Britt were elected to office.

Welcome to Los Angeles Mitt!

Los Angeles County Democratic Party Chair and California Democratic Party Vice Chair Eric C. Bauman released the following letter welcoming Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney to Los Angeles:

Dear Governor Romney,

On behalf of the Los Angeles County Democratic Party, welcome to Los Angeles!

As you swing through LA socializing at high-roller fundraisers with the likes of billionaire-turned-failed-gubernatorial-candidate Meg Whitman, we urge you to think about the tens of thousands of unemployed Californians and their families in their daily struggle to find a job – any job – to make ends meet.

We commend you for your attempts to connect with average Americans.  However, wearing flannels, sporting jeans, and jokingly pointing out that you are “unemployed” to real average Americans isn’t the right way to do it.  Not everyone has a multi-million-dollar bank account like yours to rely on during the worst economic recession since the Great Depression.

We don’t have to remind you that when you were the Governor of Massachusetts, your state ranked 47th out of 50 states in job growth and wages for average families in your state fell.  Manufacturing jobs in Massachusetts dropped by more than 14%.  Foreclosure rates increased significantly.  Now that you are running for president again, we hope that you will tell the American people the truth about your track record, rather than joking with them about the job crisis.

As you roll along the streets of Los Angeles from one mansion to another, we urge you to think about the many Angelenos and Americans who wish they had a bank account like yours, so they wouldn’t have to worry about not having income.

We hope you enjoy your stay in sunny Los Angeles.

Regards,

Eric C. Bauman

Retaking the House in 2012 Starts With Hahn

LACDP Chair Eric C. Bauman issued the following call-to-action for Democrats across LA County:

Last weekend I joined dozens of Democratic leaders and activists to celebrate the kick-off of the Janice Hahn for Congress run-off campaign.  I was so proud to see elected officials, Democratic club presidents and community leaders from across the county come together to reiterate how important it is that CD 36 be represented by an extraordinary Democrat like Janice Hahn.

In order to ensure that we send Janice to Congress we must do the work to make it happen. Democrats win when we speak from our hearts and about the issues that impact our lives – protecting Medicare and Social Security, providing a world class education for our kids, creating good jobs and preserving our natural resources -issues that Janice will fight for.  The Los Angeles County Democratic Party urges you to join us and volunteer as many hours as you can between now and the July 12th election.

We can’t let another millionaire Republican try to buy his way into office.  Hahn’s Tea Party Republican oppenent Craig Huey spent more than $500,000 to purchase second place in the Primary.  We must spread the word voter-to-voter about just how dangerous another Tea Party extremist in Congress would be.

Our path to retaking the House in 2012 starts today in CD 36 – please join us in the fight!

Eric C. Bauman Statement on CD 36 Election Results

Los Angeles County Democratic Party Chair and California Democratic Party Vice Chair Eric C. Bauman issued the following statement on the Congressional District 36 election results:

“I congratulate Janice Hahn on her primary victory. After a well fought race that featured a number of strong Democrats, it is vital that the Democratic Party come together and support Hahn. We cannot allow millionaire Tea Party extremist Craig Huey to buy this congressional seat.”

“With House Republicans vowing to end Medicare as we know it, it is now more important than ever that we elect a strong proven leader like Janice Hahn who will fight for everyday Californians.”
