LACDP Statement on the 115 Reported Deaths Resulting from Mass Shootings Since the Charleston Tragedy

LACDP Chair and California Democratic Party Vice Chair Eric C. Bauman released the following statement regarding the recent shootings in Virginia, whose 3 fatalities were among the reported 115 deaths resulting from mass shootings since the tragedy at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church:
“Last week, another highly publicized shooting has taken place in America.  A tragedy at the end of agun which took two lives.  I ask you to join with me to mourn their passing and give their families and communities our condolences in their time of grief.

“And while a chorus of gun rights activists raise their hackles and say this is not the time to talk aboutgun control, let me say I disagree.  They said the same thing after the shootings in South Carolina, and nothing more has been done to stem the tide of bloodshed our citizens have faced.

“This is the time to demand answers.

“Answers for the 115 deaths and 389 injuries resulting from mass shootings in the last 10 weeks since the massacre at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church – an event that Vester Flanagan (aka Bryce Williams) noted as a tipping point leading him to conduct his own personal rampage against his former colleagues.

“I don’t claim to have all of the answers, but it is obvious that the Second Amendment was not meant to allow for this wanton violence.

“It was not intended for more Americans to have died in the last 50 years from small arms at the hands of their fellow citizens than in all wars America has fought since our founding.

“It was not meant for mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, friends and neighbors, to mourn day after day in America over a death of a loved one at the end of a gun.

“Something needs to change.”
