Long Beach Editor Discourages People from Voting in Local Elections

LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles County Democratic Party Chair Mark Gonzalez released the following statement regarding statements made the editor of a local Long Beach paper asking people not to vote in the Tuesday, April 10, 2018 local elections:

“I am utterly shocked that an alleged voice in the community would tell people to not vote in their local elections. Local elections affect every individual’s life more impactfully than any other type of election, and Harry Saltzgaver of a local Long Beach publication has the gall to go online and tell people to not vote. Instead of using his position to tell every voter to research every candidate and ballot measure to make a decision as an informed citizen, he is actively engaging in voter suppression by telling people to not vote, and insisting that there be a “test” to prove you should be allowed to vote in the first place. Someone needs to tell Mr. Saltzgaver that we now have a little something called civil rights that says, among other things, that voter suppression is not tolerated.”
