LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles County Democratic Party Chair and California Democratic Party Vice Chair Eric C. Bauman released the following statement on the despicable race-baiting attacks against Lancaster City Council candidate Jonathon Ervin in the April 8, 2014 election:
“The Los Angeles County Democratic Party strongly condemns the outrageous and racist attack mail piece against Lancaster City Council candidate Jonathon Ervin released by Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris.
“The mail piece features a letter from Parris against a bright red and blue background with headline reading ‘A CALL TO ACTION for Lancaster Residents!’ and a tagline reading ‘Don’t let street gangs get a foothold at City Hall. VOTE AGAINST gang candidate Jonathon Ervin!’ On the reverse side, it features a photo from a local demonstration, with Council candidate Jonathon Ervin’s head circled in red, labeling him with caption ‘Ervin Directing Anti-Sheriff Protest’ and a headline reading ‘Ervin leads protest against Law Enforcement … Lancaster Sheriff’s Deputies slandered as ‘Murderers and Thugs!’
“The imagery and words used clearly invoke fear of criminal activities and falsely depict Ervin, an African American U.S. Air Force veteran and an aerospace engineer, as a gangster. Mayor Parris should be ashamed of himself for using offensive, unfounded, and discriminatory attacks to mischaracterize Ervin simply to rile up voter sentiments in an attempt to score cheap political points. We do not need this type of inflammatory and racist mailer to perpetuate racism against African Americans.
“The Los Angeles County Democratic Party calls on the voters of Lancaster to reject and condemn this type of discriminatory scare tactics.”
California Democratic Party African American Caucus Chair Darren Parker added:
“We call on Mayor Parris to issue an apology to the people of Lancaster and immediately cease using these types of scare tactics and negative campaigning in his own city.”
