Dear Los Angeles County Democrat,
Are YOU paying attention? Never before in our time have we seen women speak up AND be heard. From the #MeToo movement, to the election of a record number of women to Congress this past fall, the return of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Congresswoman Maxine Waters serving as the first African American woman to Chair the House Financial Services Committee, the first woman Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis, and the first Latina to lead the California Democratic Party Acting Chair Alex Gallardo-Rooker. Although these accomplishments are great strides in the right direction, women’s rights continue to be imperiled by Trump’s Administration and Republicans obsessed with women’s wombs and their place outside the home.
As Democrats, as part of the LACDP leadership, we are strongly committed to fighting back against this Administration’s attempts to gag us all and takes us back to the dark times in women’s lives. We stand on the shoulders of brave, bold, and fearless women like Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, Civil Rights Icon Dolores Huerta, Congresswoman Patsy Takemoto Mink, and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg who stood up and fought for our civil rights at a time when there was little to no support.
Now, we have women from all corners of the world taking charge and calling out the misogynists and taking names. From Congresswoman Maxine Waters taking on Trump’s racist rhetoric–”Bring it ON” to the first State Surgeon General Dr. Nadine Burke Harris who is breaking many barriers with her appointment, to women ascending the corporate ladder, we are taking over.
As we head into the 2020 Presidential Election Cycle, we have many choices with more great women to choose from than at any other time since Congresswoman Chisholm took the first shot or the first national Democratic Vice Presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro. In the meantime, as Californians we take pride in having the strongest female leaders from the U.S. Senate with Senator Dianne Feinstein and Senator Kamala Harris, to California Treasurer Fiona Ma, California Controller Betty Yee, and locally our three outstanding Los Angeles County Supervisors Hilda Solis, Sheila Kuehl, and Janice Hahn, and Councilmembers Nury Martinez and Monica Rodriguez are instrumental in the resistance. Boldly defying the Kavanaughs and the assaults on our rights as women to choice!
May we remember and rejoice in the achievements of all the women who came before us this month.Bread and Roses!
