Central Valley Parent and Teacher Slam Carly Fiorina for Choosing Pink Slips for Teachers and Tax Breaks for Companies that Ship Jobs Overseas
Fiorina calls “disgraceful” the new jobs bill that saves education jobs and ends tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas

A San Joaquin Valley parent and teacher are denouncing Carly Fiorina for opposing a new jobs bill that will save more than 2,700 education jobs in Valley public schools and is fully paid for by closing a tax break for companies that ship jobs overseas. The bill will save 16,500 education jobs in California.

“Carly Fiorina gave pink slips to 33,000 Hewlett-Packard employees and now she is offering pink slips to more than 2,700 educators in the Central Valley that help our students learn in the classroom. Carly Fiorina may say the jobs bill is ‘disgraceful’ but the real disgrace is that she is willing to reward companies that ship jobs overseas rather than California students,” said Diana Roberts-Lockling, a teacher in Madera Unified School District.

“The question is: does Carly Fiorina stand with companies that ship jobs overseas or does she stand with California’s students? Unfortunately the answer is Fiorina is willing to give teachers in the Central Valley a pink slip and hurt our students because she wants to protect tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas. For Carly Fiorina, who boasted about shipping jobs overseas when she was at Hewlett-Packard, the answer is not surprising,” said David Lockling, wife of Diana and a parent of two students in the Madera Unified School District.

On August 10, President Obama signed into law “The American Jobs and Closing Tax Loopholes Act,” a bill that gives urgent fiscal relief to enable 160,000 teachers to keep their jobs. In California, 16,500 educators will keep their jobs. According to the Los Angeles Times, “the bill is fully paid for mainly by ending some tax breaks for companies operating overseas.” (August 11, 2010)

On August 6, Republican Senate candidate Carly Fiorina announced her opposition to the bill. According to the Associated Press, Fiorina called the bill “disgraceful.” (August 6, 2010)

The National Education Association estimates that this law will save 2776 educator jobs in the San Joaquin Valley, including 545 jobs in Congressional District 18 (Cardoza), 351 jobs in Congressional District 19 (Radanovich), 915 jobs in Congressional District 20 (Costa), 642 jobs in Congressional District 21 (Nunes), and 323 jobs in Congressional District 22 (McCarthy).
