Los Angeles County Democratic Party Urges Board of Supervisors to Safeguard the Integrity of Los Angeles County Voting Systems As It Replaces the County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles County Democratic Party (LACDP) adopted a resolution urging the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to conduct a comprehensive, thorough national search for a permanent replacement of the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk. With next year’s presidential elections just around the corner, LACDP believes that selecting the best, most qualified candidate should be the Supervisors’ top priority in the coming months.

With nearly four million voters in Los Angeles County, it is paramount for the Supervisors to be exhaustive and diligent in their search in order to select an outstanding individual who will protect the integrity of Los Angeles County’s voting systems. The Supervisors need to take a wide spectrum of considerations into account, including the job candidates’ ethical standards, openness to transparency, possible conflicts of interest, professional history and willingness to communicate openly with Los Angeles County voters and their duly elected representatives.

LACDP Chair Eric C. Bauman emphasized, “A citizen’s right to vote is the foundation of democracy. Safeguarding the integrity of voting is critical to preserving our trust in our government and elections. LA County’s top elections official must have the experience, integrity and ability to ensure that every vote is counted – and is counted as cast.”

The text of the resolution is as follows:

RESOLUTION CONCERNING THE PERMANENT REPLACEMENT OF THE REGISTRAR-RECORDER/COUNTY CLERK OF THE COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES

Whereas, the position of Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk of the County of Los Angeles is vacant due to the retirement of Conny McCormack, and is being filled on a temporary basis by Chief Deputy Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk Dean Logan;

And whereas, the County of Los Angeles operates the largest county election system in the nation, with nearly four million registered voters and more than 200 electoral jurisdictions; and the right to participate in the election of government officials through the vote of individual citizens is the most exalted right of citizenship in the United States;

And whereas, recent history has demonstrated the ease with which election results may be altered, tampered with, restated or otherwise misrepresented through the actions of individuals, groups, electronic or computerized systems or the absence of proper standards, oversight and quality controls;

Therefore, be it resolved that the Los Angeles County Democratic Party urges the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to conduct a thorough and comprehensive national search for a new Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk, permitting the selection of an individual of outstanding quality and experience, who is committed to conducting elections in a transparent, open, trustworthy and honest manner and who will ensure for the people of Los Angeles that every vote is accurately counted as cast;

Be it further resolved, that any candidates considered for this critical position have the relevant education and experience necessary and appropriate to oversee the operation of the largest county election system in the nation; be of the highest caliber, with superior ethical standards, an unsullied professional history, free of conflicts-of-interest and ties to election system vendors and have a willingness to maintain an open and ongoing dialogue with the voters of Los Angeles and their duly elected representatives.
