Protecting California’s Most Vulnerable

Los Angeles County Democratic Party Vice Chair Mark Gonzalez released the following statement after Governor Brown and Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León reached an agreement on the language of SB 54 to make California a sanctuary state:

“California can breathe a sigh of relief. SB 54 is a landmark piece of resistance against the xenophobic and hateful Trump administration and we are ever grateful that a mutual agreement was reached between Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León and Governor Jerry Brown to ensure its signing upon passage. Thanks to SB 54, California’s law enforcement agencies will not be compelled to share information with immigration authorities, ensuring that anyone, documented or not, cannot be used as pawns to tear families apart.

“Thanks to this bill, anyone in California will be able call their local law enforcement to report a crime or incident without fear of being deported. Let this send a signal that California’s leaders are unified against those xenophobes who attempt to use fear and hate to drive a wedge between those whose only difference is the language they speak or the color of their skin: California does not and will not tolerate hate or the policies that hate devises.”
