Resolution to Support of President Obama’s Efforts to Reduce Gun Violence

Nik Swiatek February 11, 2013 0

WHEREAS, the United States had 16 mass shootings in 2012, at locations such as health spas, nightclubs, schools, hospitals, coffee shops, soccer games, movie theaters and places of worship; some of these shootings have been so horrific and senseless they have shocked the entire nation; over the past 12 months, there have been 14 school shootings, every year there are approximately 100,000 victims of gun violence; and
WHEREAS, 80% of the guns used in mass shootings were obtained legally, these guns are available from 129,817 federally licensed firearms dealers (that’s more than all American grocery stores, Starbucks and McDonald’s combined); these gun dealers will have sold more than twenty million guns last year alone; and

WHEREAS, while President Obama strongly believes that the Second Amendment guarantees individuals the right to bear arms, he also believes this is the time to make common sense efforts to protect children and our communities from gun violence;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Los Angeles County Democratic Party supports President Obama’s efforts to close background check loopholes for all gun sales, ban military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, make schools safer and increase access to mental health services; and

THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we will communicate our support for the President’s plans to reduce gun violence to the California Democratic Party and to the California Democratic Congressional delegation.
