Resolution in Favor of Modification of U.S. Senate Rules

Resolution in Favor of Modification of U.S. Senate Rules

WHEREAS, the Senate is currently operating under archaic rules, such as the filibuster, now requiring 60 votes to invoke cloture, and the one-Senator unlimited ‘hold’ on any pending legislation or political appointment; and

WHEREAS, Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio and others are circulating a letter requesting that reform rules be adopted at the beginning of the next Senate; and

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Los Angeles County Democratic Party shall urge our Senators, Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein, and the Democratic National Committee to advocate changes in the Senate cloture rules regarding filibusters of limited duration or to require decreasing numbers of votes to invoke cloture, and to advocate the elimination of ‘holds’ by Senators or to make them of limited duration.
