Resolution on Repealing the Ban on General Election Write-Ins

WHEREAS, Californians could vote for write-in candidates in general elections from 1891 through 2010 but the law implementing California’s top-two primary banned write-ins at the general election, and

WHEREAS, the U. S. Supreme Court and the California Supreme Courts have confirmed the constitutionality of the ban on general election write-ins, the California Court asserting that the top-two system is really a ‘single election’ with ‘two rounds of voting’

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Los Angeles County Democratic Party calls for a repeal of California’s ban on general election write-in candidates because it disenfranchises voters, and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Los Angeles County Democratic Party inform the California Democratic Party and the Democratic members of the legislature of this position.
