Resolution Regarding Iranian Nuclear Ambitions and Negotiations

WHEREAS the Democratic Party opposes war, aggression and nuclear proliferation; supports human rights, particularly the rights of women, minority populations and LGBT individuals; and recognizes that the Islamic Republic of Iran is, in essence, an Islamist theocracy; is the world’s leading supporter of international terrorism; funds groups that have targeted American servicemembers and civilian alike, as well as civilians of other countries; and violates the human rights of Iranian women, gays, and ethnic and religious minorities, including the execution of Bahais for their religious beliefs and the execution of gays for their sexual orientation;

WHEREAS both Democratic and Republican administrations have concluded that the Islamic Republic of Iran has long had a secretive nuclear weapons program; Iran wants nuclear weapons in order to increase its influence in the Middle East; has threatened to use them to destroy Israel; has violated United Nations Security Council resolutions demanding the end of Iran’s nuclear weapons program; has on numerous occasions drawn out the negotiations with the United States and other Western powers in order to buy time to continue developing nuclear weapons; and a nuclear-armed Iran will not merely make war in the Middle East more likely, but more destructive, setting off a nuclear arms race in the region;

WHEREAS the “P5+1” (the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, China, Russia and the European Union) have entered into an interim agreement with Iran to temporarily lift certain sanctions while leaving most others in place, until a final agreement can be negotiated, implemented and verified that would stop the enrichment of uranium and plutonium with which nuclear weapons could be created;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Los Angeles County Democratic Party reaffirms the United States’ goal of a cautious, peaceful diplomatic solution that makes it impossible for the Islamic Republic of Iran to acquire nuclear weapons; and in achieving that goal all options are on the table, including strengthening international economic sanctions against Iran, if necessary;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Los Angeles County Democratic Party inform President Barack Obama, Secretary of State John Kerry, and the members of the California congressional delegation of this position.
