Resolution Supporting Appeal of Vergara v. California

Whereas, teachers do not have “lifetime employment” but are entitled to due process rights, relating to assignment, discipline, and termination, and teachers can and have been dismissed through administrative processes which are established in existing contracts and have been streamlined by legislation passed in 2014, and

Whereas, the recent Vergara v. California decision holds that these due process rights are unconstitutional.

Therefore be it resolved, that the Los Angeles County Democratic Party condemns the Vergara ruling and supports Governor Brown, Superintendent Torlakson and Attorney General Kamala Harris’s appeal of the court’s ruling, and

Be it further resolved, that this resolution be distributed to School Superintendent Tom Torlakson, Governor Jerry Brown and Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newson, Attorney General Kamala Harris, Governor Jerry Brown and Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newson.
