Resolution Supporting Definition of Personhood As A Human Person Only

WHEREAS, the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United v. FEC threatens to tear apart the fabric of our democracy and grant powerful corporations unfettered influence in our political process and is a drastic departure from previous law and our core values as a nation and it must be met with an appropriate response; and

WHEREAS, it is imperative that we work to immediately halt the impact of the Court’s decision and think boldly about the best way to free our democracy from the dominance of corporate money; and

WHEREAS, the reform ideas already circulating are promising they do not address the basic issue that corporations should not have the same rights as individuals;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Los Angeles County Democratic Party calls on Congress to amend current corporate law such that corporations are no longer defined as persons, and

THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the LACDP will notify the California Democratic delegation that they are requested to advance this urgent issue as quickly as possible through Congress.
