Resolution Supporting Normal Relations with Cuba

WHEREAS the U.S. government has not had diplomatic relations with Cuba for more than 50 years and even bans Americans from traveling to and trading with Cuba, to the detriment of American and Cuban people and businesses, yet has diplomatic relations with other Communist states, including Vietnam and China, and facilitates travel and trade with these countries, and

WHEREAS China and Vietnam have in the past waged war against the U.S. and killed or wounded many Americans, and Cuba has not done so but merely nationalized plantations owned by large U.S. agribusiness corporations, and

WHEREAS engagement with Communist-ruled nations has improved the lives of the common people and has increased their demand for and means to obtain greater political and economic freedom,

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Los Angeles County Democratic Party requests the U.S. government to establish normal relations with Cuba, including diplomatic missions, travel and trade, as it has done with China and Vietnam, and

BE IT ALSO RESOLVED that the Los Angeles County Democratic Party will communicate this request to President Barack Obama, Secretary of State John Kerry, Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker, chairperson of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Robert Menendez of N.J., Committee Member Barbara Boxer and Senator Dianne Feinstein.
