Retain University of California Autonomy
Whereas, the University of California has served California and its citizens as a world model of accessible and diverse education and a driver of innovation for more than 140 years without legislative intervention, and graduates more than 55,000 highly qualified students into the workforce each year; and
Whereas, the University of California continues to attract top leaders to its 10 campuses and 5 medical centers despite paying its distinguished faculty and staff well below the national average for comparable institutions; and
Whereas, placing the University of California under the management of the California Legislature would subject the University of California to the same pressures and constraints that are impacting the budget process,
Therefore be it resolved, that the Los Angeles County Democratic Party urges the Democratic Caucus in Sacramento to reject any legislation or constitutional amendments that would strip the University of California of its autonomy, and
Be it further resolved, the Los Angeles County Democratic Party send a copy of this resolution to the California state legislature.
