Resolution Supporting A Public Option in Healthcare Reform

Resolution Supporting A Public Option in Healthcare Reform

Whereas, President Obama’s call for Congress to pass a healthcare reform package represents the best chance of improving our healthcare system in a generation, and

Whereas, the goal of healthcare reform should be expanding health coverage to every American, ensuring the long-term fiscal solvency of Medicare and Medicaid, preventing rising healthcare costs from crippling our government and economy, and improving healthcare outcomes across the board, and

Whereas, short of the best solution — creating a single-payer plan — no healthcare reform can be successful in these goals without the creation of a true public option, similar to Medicare, open to all Americans, that competes with private insurance and utilizes low administrative costs, rate bargaining with providers and pharmaceutical companies, and technological cost-savings measure to improve efficiency,

Therefore be it resolved, that the Los Angeles County Democratic Party supports a Medicare-style single payer healthcare system, and

Be it further resolved, that should Congress move forward with a non-single payer healthcare system, the Los Angeles County Democratic Party strongly supports the inclusion of a government run, Medicare-style, public option health insurance system that permits the federal government to negotiate reduced prices for medical care and prescription products and the Los Angeles County Democratic Party will forward this resolution to our California Senators, California Congressional delegation, the Secretary of HHS and President Barack Obama.
