Statement on NRA and Tim Donnelly’s Plan to Recall Latino Legislators

Los Angeles County Democratic Party Chair and California Democratic Party Vice Chair Eric C. Bauman released the following statement on the efforts by the National Rifle Association, Tea Party GOP Gubernatorial candidate Tim Donnelly and other right-wing extremists to recall Latino Democratic state legislators:

“Now we have seen it all: Tea Party Assembly Member-turned-Gubernatorial candidate Tim Donnelly and his out-of-touch right-wing extremist friends are making a Hail Mary attempt to create news and make themselves relevant in California government and politics. A significant majority of the State Legislature voted in support of sensible gun control laws. That this recall attempt focuses on but five Latino legislators from amongst them belies their true agenda.

“This political stunt abuses California’s recall process and targets Latino Democrats. It is overtly racist, baseless, and despicable. Bottom line, this is just another scheme backed by the NRA and out-of-state Tea Party operatives to try to upend California’s Democrat majority government and political process. Californians won’t be fooled by this deceptive scheme.

“The Los Angeles County Democratic Party stands strongly behind State Senators Norma Torres and Ben Hueso; Assembly Members Sharon Quirk-Silva and Lorena Gonzalez; and Speaker of the Assembly John A. Pérez, and all Democrats in the Legislature who may face this nefarious recall attempt.”
