Veterans Day has always been a somber celebration of our nation’s heroes. On this particular Veterans Day, however, we can’t help but remind ourselves of what our veterans do not just on the battlefield, but also as civilians who protect and preserve our freedoms and livelihoods.
Today, in Los Angeles and California, it is impossible to forget that many veterans come home to continue to serve as first responders; the very people who are putting their lives on the line to protect us against the trials of nature like the fires raging across our state, and against the worst of humanity by putting their lives on the line against mass shooters like the evil that was in Thousand Oaks this past week.
These veterans remind us every day that the opportunity to fight for a more perfect union for every person in this country comes at a cost, and that many come back to continue fighting on a different battlefield, but for the same livelihoods.
As we commemorate our veterans and remember the 100th anniversary of the end of the “War to End All Wars,” please consider donating time and/or money to the American Red Cross by clicking here, calling 1-800-RED-CROSS, or by texting CAWILDFIRES to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
As Democrats fight to make our country free and equitable for all, we will never forget the sacrificies made by our veterans, the scars they bring home – both visible and invisible – and the sacrifice many continue to make upon returning from their service.
