Chair's Statement Following the DA's Reinstatement of the Death Penalty

LOS ANGELES COUNTY --

Los Angeles County Democratic Party (LACDP) Chair Mark Ramos has released the following statement in response to DA Nathan Hochman's decision to reinstate the death penalty in Los Angeles County:

"The recent decision of Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman to resume pursuing the death penalty is not only deeply concerning; it strips away years of progress that LA has made in enhancing public safety and creating a more fair justice system.

The reinstatement of the death penalty ignores the overwhelming evidence that it fails to deter crime and contributes to irreversible injustices, particularly in cases of wrongful convictions. Additionally, it disproportionately targets Black and Brown individuals, perpetuating systemic racial inequities within the legal system.

Rather than doubling down on a practice that deepens racial divides and fails to serve justice, the DA’s office should be focused on restorative justice, rehabilitation, and crime prevention initiatives that address the root causes of violence. The choice is clear: remain out of step with public opinion and modern justice principles or stand with the growing majority who reject the death penalty as an effective tool for public safety.

The death penalty has no place in Los Angeles. I call upon District Attorney Hochman and his office to immediately reverse this decision."
