LACDP Chair Mark Gonzalez Steps Down
LOS ANGELES COUNTY --
"Like so many of you, I began my journey at the age of 16 with the intention and determination that we are a collective - the sum of many parts - working together to build a better future. I could never have imagined the path that would lead me to where I stand today, having assumed a role in 2017 at the age of 33, becoming the youngest and first Latino Chair in the history of the Los Angeles County Democratic Party.
With a vision to foster inclusivity, thoughtfulness, and strategic direction, together we fought battles that changed the course of our party and history. The backdrop of Donald Trump's 2016 election victory cast a shadow over our nation's standing, both domestically and internationally. Undeterred, we rallied Democrats from Palmdale to Long Beach in preparation for pivotal elections in 2018 and 2020, ensuring that we sent President Biden and Vice President Harris to the White House.
Little did we anticipate how the historical magnitude of the pandemic that swept the globe would force us as an organization to adapt swiftly and make necessary changes to ensure your safety and the safety of our fellow Angelenos. From transitioning our meetings to virtual platforms and collaborating with elected officials and non-profit organizations, we mobilized resources to combat COVID-19 and ensure that we were continuing to maintain the integrity of our work and our party’s values on behalf of our 3.1 million Democrats. Despite the profound losses of our neighbors, friends, and loved ones, we witnessed the resilience of humanity as everyone stepped up to support one another – a testament to that enduring phrase: “we are our brother’s keeper.”
I take immense pride in our collective efforts to elect Democrats at every level, not solely within Los Angeles County but across California. We remain committed to upholding progressive Democratic values as we look toward another monumental and consequential election. As we say, as goes Los Angeles, goes California, goes the nation.
Serving as your party Chair for the largest County Central Committee in the nation has been the privilege of a lifetime. As I embark on the next phase of my journey, with a focus now on ensuring that Sacramento continues to create policy that works for all, the work we have done together will forever remain close to my heart. With that focus in mind and to ensure our party’s continuity of leadership and continued success, I am stepping down as Chair effective immediately. I have confidence in Vice-Chair Patt Sanders who will temporarily assume the duties as our Central Committee transitions into once again bringing in new faces and new ideas.
To the dedicated staff, past and present, esteemed party leaders, members, and mentors – I extend my deepest gratitude for your unwavering guidance and support throughout the years. I look forward to continuing to stand by you in the fights ahead.
As we honor the legacy of labor leader and civil rights activist, César Chavez, “There’s no turning back…We will win. We are winning because ours is a revolution of mind and heart…”
¡Si, se puede!"
