"The Los Angeles County Democratic Party mourns the passing of former State Senator and Los Angeles City Councilmember Nate Holden, who died on May 7, 2025, at the age of 95. A trailblazer and tireless advocate for the people of South Los Angeles, Senator Holden’s legacy is woven into the fabric of our community.
Elected to the California State Senate in 1974, Senator Holden was instrumental in advancing civil rights and social justice. He authored the landmark legislation that made California the first state to officially recognize Martin Luther King Jr. Day, setting a precedent that would inspire the nation. He also championed policies that improved public safety, expanded public parks, and promoted equality, such as legislation that allowed women to obtain mortgages without a male co-signer.
In 1987, Senator Holden was elected to the Los Angeles City Council, where he served for 16 years. His leadership transformed District 10, earning him the affectionate nickname “The Chief.” He was known for his hands-on approach to constituent service, breaking the district into grids to ensure every neighborhood received attention. His work led to the creation of the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center, a lasting tribute to his commitment to the cultural vitality of our city.
