#TrumpCheck - The Lies About Californian's Voting Power

Happy Wednesday, Democrats. Welcome back to our #TrumpCheck series, the LACDP's weekly newsletter that holds the Trump administration accountable for its lies, deception, and self-serving actions.

California legislators are on summer recess right now, but that doesn't mean that things have slowed down in the world of politics.

Governor Gavin Newsom is advocating for a special election to be held on November 4, 2025, to pass a ballot measure that would create pathways to 5 new Democratic seats in Congress come the 2026 midterm elections. This is in response to Texas Governor Greg Abbott's plan to create 5 new Republican seats in the red state. For a more detailed rundown of gerrymandering all over the country, check out last week's #TrumpCheck

California is the most populous state, and Los Angeles County is the largest county in the United States by population. Approximately one in eight Americans lives in California. By sheer numbers, we wield considerable power in elections. This week, we are here to unpack the lies surrounding the voting power of Californians. Let's get to it...

FACTThere is no evidence of anything being 'rigged' in the California voting system. Let's give Trump the benefit of the doubt and assume he is talking about the electoral college as the 'rigged voting system' that takes away GOP opportunities for success. When it comes to voter registration data, 2024 information shows that only 24.7% of voters in California are registered Republicans.

Guess what, Donald? 24.7% doesn't win elections.

FACT: In April of 2025, California surpassed Japan as the fourth-largest economy in the world. Germany, China, and the US as a whole are the only economies that surpass California in terms of GDP. The second closest US state? Texas, coming in at #9. Trump's beloved Florida, home of Mar-A-Lago, scores in 19th place with a GDP nearly 75% lower than California's

When it comes to approval ratings, nearly twice as many likely voters support their California legislators compared to those who approve of Trump's performance

FACT: When fires broke out across Los Angeles just days before his inauguration, Trump threatened to cut FEMA aid and falsely accused Governor Newsom of causing the fires and creating water shortages

By June, Trump was threatening to arrest Governor Newsom, citing that “He’s done a terrible job." It doesn't seem like Trump has kept his promise of a 'great relationship' with state leaders, especially considering the federal government's reliance on Californian tax dollars. California contributes $83 billion more in federal taxes than it receives in federal funding

Remember, Californians...

Our state holds a lot of power.

Our votes matter
