#TrumpCheck - The Truth about GOP Priorities

Happy Wednesday, Democrats. Welcome back to our #TrumpCheck series, the LACDP's weekly newsletter that holds the Trump administration accountable for its lies, deception, and self-serving actions.

There's plenty of news making headlines these days. As Putin and Trump prepare for their highly publicized meeting, Tropical Storm Erin is shaping up to likely be the first hurricane of the season, and the National Guard moves into DC neighborhoods.

However, natural disasters and foreign policy seem to be the least of the Trump administration, and the greater MAGA movement's concerns. They want to focus instead on creating new $250 bills with Trump's face on them, turning the DC metro system into the "Trump Train," and adding Trump to the faces of Mount Rushmore.

For empathetic or civically minded Americans, Trump's priorities have always seemed backwards to what is really important, or even what is important to him. Even while preaching the GOP gospel of reducing government spending for almost 10 years, his 'Big Beautiful Bill' puts the US in $3.3 trillion of debt over the next 10 years.

Lately, though, the contrast between what MAGA campaigned on and what they are trying to accomplish is particularly stark. So, let's unpack the truth about the GOP's priorities.

FACT: Trump's Health and Human Services Secretary, RFK Jr., issued a directive in March to gut the Administration for Community Living, a government agency "created around the fundamental principle that older adults and people of all ages with disabilities should be able to live where they choose, with the people they choose, and with the ability to participate fully in their communities." He also cut SNAP, a critical food assistance program that nearly 6.5 million low-income senior adults rely on.

FACT: Within his first 100 days, Trump had announced plans to eliminate 80,000 staff members from the Department of Veterans Affairs, including staff who operate the Veterans' Suicide Hotline and crisis resources. This comes after his 2020 comments that military servicemen are 'suckers and losers,' as reported by The Atlantic.

FACT: The Congressional Budget Office, a nonpartisan organization, estimated that 10 million people will lose health insurance with the passing of Trump's budget bill. This includes particularly vulnerable populations, like children, the elderly, and those with disabilities

Trump can preach caring about seniors, veterans, and health insurance, but actions show what really matters.

And what is the MAGA movement focusing on?

Oh, that's right... renaming 'Flag Day' as 'Trump's Birthday and Flag Day'

Let's fight back, Democrats. You can check your voter registration status here. Voting is the #1 tool that Americans have against MAGA. The next step in standing up to the Trump administration is setting the record straight; correcting misinformation is a job for us all.
