#TrumpCheck - The Lies About the 'Big, Beautiful' Bill

Happy Wednesday, Democrats, and happy early 4th of July! Welcome back to our #TrumpCheck series, the LACDP's weekly newsletter that holds the Trump administration accountable for its lies, deception, self-serving actions, and crimes. 

Friday is the 4th of July, and as folks light the grill and set off fireworks, Capitol Hill is all aglow in anticipation. Since he came into office in January, Trump has been promoting a July 4th deadline for his 'Big Beautiful Bill'.  

Trump cannot seem to make up his mind about when he actually expects approval of the bill; he said on Tuesday that “I’d love to do July 4th, but I think it’s very hard to do July 4th,” Trump said, before adding that the goal is “somewhere around there.” In a Truth Social post the same day, Trump seems to advise legislators to "Keep it going, and be done before you and your family go on a July 4th vacation."

So, before we all go on our 'July 4th vacations' on Friday, let's unpack the truth of what is actually in the proposed budget reconciliation bill H.R.1 — 119th Congress (2025-2026).

• While facing criticism on how the spending bill will impact Medicaid coverage for Americans, Donald Trump said, "I have said it so many times, you shouldn't even be asking me that question.... read my lips, we aren't going to touch it."

FACT: The Congressional Budget Office (CBO), which performs nonpartisan budget analysis for Congress, has reported that nearly 12 million Americans would be left without insurance over the next 10 years if the bill passes. Rural hospitals would be hit harder than urban hospitals by the cuts to healthcare, co-pays would increase for doctor's visits for many, and legal immigrants would lose access to affordable coverage. 

• While on the campaign trail in August, VP Vance advocated for increasing the national child tax credit from $2,000 per child to $5,000 per child. "President Trump has been on the record for a long time supporting a bigger child tax credit, and I think you want it to apply to all American families."

FACT: The proposed bill, in fact, does the exact opposite; the current language lowers the child tax credit to its pre-2017 level of $1,000 per child. 

This ugly little bill takes millions of dollars away from families with children, to put it directly towards tax breaks for corporations and high-income households.  Vance easily abandoned his belief that it is the "task of our government to make it easier for young moms and dads to afford to have kids," as Vance was the tie-breaking vote in the Senate to take the bill to the House floor. 

• Trump has, for over ten years, campaigned on the promise of lowering the national debt, blaming budget deficits on Democrats. "I'm the king of debt. I’m great with debt. Nobody knows debt better than me," Trump said during an interview with CBS's Norah O'Donnell in the lead up to the 2016 election. "We’ve got to get rid of the $19 trillion in debt," Trump said during a 2016 interview with The Washington Post.

FACT: Trump seems to have completely changed his tune on the national debt. As tracked by the CBO, the "Big Beautiful Bill" would add $3.3 trillion to the national debt over the next 10 years. I guess being the 'king of debt' means he knows how to create it?

The federal government might be determined to attack everyday Americans with its budget plan, but Democrats are just as determined to stand up against these attacks.

#TrumpCheck - The Lies About National Security

Happy Wednesday, Democrats. Welcome back to our #TrumpCheck series, the LACDP's weekly newsletter that holds the Trump administration accountable for its lies, deception, self-serving actions, and crimes. 

The news cycle seems to be moving faster and faster these days, with the United States seemingly entering and then exiting a war in the same week. Donald Trump seems to have a new perspective on happenings in the Middle East from minute-to-minute, according to his Truth Social account. 

For someone who constantly critiqued Former President Biden's handling of foreign conflicts all over the globe, Trump seems to be mangling the United States' soft power across the planet, including at this week's NATO summit. In light of the mess he is making with American foreign affairs, we are here today to debunk the lies that he and his cronies are spreading now about national security. 

• When speaking about concerns about Iranian counter-attacks on American soil, Vice President JD Vance said that “We’re doing everything that we can to keep our people safe." A White House statement confirmed that the "United States stands ready to take further action, as necessary and appropriate, to address further threats or attacks."

FACT: The allocation of resources to counterterrorism efforts directly rebuts this claim. Not only did Trump fire the head of the National Security Agency and U.S. Cyber Command in April, but thousands of F.B.I. officials typically tasked with cybersecurity or counterintelligence assignments have been reassigned to assist I.C.E. with immigration enforcement and raids. 2,000 Justice Department agents have also been reassigned to work with I.C.E, abandoning other law enforcement duties with the U.S. Marshals Service, the DEA, and the Bureau of ATF. 

• In a joint press conference with NATO General Secretary Mark Rutte, (who, bizarrely enough, referred to Trump as 'Daddy') Trump declared his belief that the Iranian nuclear program has been set back 'decades' by the bombings on nuclear development sites over the last few days. Of rebuilding the Iranian nuclear program, he said, "I don't think they are ever going to do it again."

FACT: Sources close to the findings of an early report from the Pentagon cite that the development of nuclear weapons could be set back by "only a few months." As reported by BBC, it is the intelligence that requires "a level of extremely high specialist scientific knowledge" that has not been destroyed, despite Israeli attempts to assassinate scientists with knowledge of the construction steps. 

• When asked about how American's should feel about the state of national security, in light of conflicts in the Middle East, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said "Trust in President Trump. President Trump has incredible instincts, and President Trump kept America and the world safe in his first term."

FACT: Donald Trump's 'incredible instincts' have led him to appoint a 22-year-old former gardener and grocery clerk to run a division of the Department of Homeland Security. Thomas Fugate, who finished college last year, is now tasked with preventing hate-fueled attacks, school shootings, and other forms of targeted violence for The Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships.

“Like putting the intern in charge,” said a counterterrorism researcher close to the CP3 program.

Really, Donald? 'Incredible instincts' at work. 

The attacks from Trump and his administration may seem like they are coming from all directions, but it is the strength of our communities that will carry us through. 

However you show up in your neighborhood this week, donating to a mutual aid fund for detainees, reporting an ICE sighting, circulating 'Know Your Rights' information, planning your sign for the July 17th 'No Kings' protest, or simply checking in on your neighbors, it takes all of us to fight Trump's authoritarian attack on our home.

LACDP Chair Mark Ramos' statement following VP Vance's Statement to the Press

LOS ANGELES COUNTY --

Los Angeles County Democratic Party (LACDP) Chair Mark Ramos has released the following statement in response to Vice President Vance's statements at the FBI building in Westwood:

"The press conference we just witnessed from Vice President Vance was a disgrace, disorganized, dishonest, and dangerous.

Let’s be clear: Neither Governor Newsom nor Mayor Bass has ever encouraged vigilante justice or unlawful behavior of any kind.

No Democratic organization in Los Angeles has ever condoned violence against law enforcement or supported actions that would endanger officers. That is not who we are.

The only weapons being deployed in our communities are those in the hands of ICE agents and deputized military forces used against our residents, not the other way around.

We refuse to let Trump’s team rewrite the narrative. ICE is not under attack; our communities are. Families have been torn apart. Pregnant women, parents, seniors, and even schoolchildren have been targeted in cruel, racially motivated raids.

The Los Angeles County Democratic Party unequivocally condemns Vice President Vance’s reckless lies, except for one thing: Los Angeles is a beautiful city and a beacon of the American promise.

We will all keep fighting until that promise extends to every immigrant, every family, every neighbor, free from fear and full of dignity."
