#TrumpCheck - The Lies About Promises Made... Vs. Promises Kept

Happy Wednesday, Democrats. Welcome back to our #TrumpCheck series, the LACDP's weekly newsletter that holds the Trump administration accountable for its lies, deception, self-serving actions, and crimes. 

Summer is in full swing, and so is the MAGA movement in Washington, unfortunately. It has been six months since Trump's 2025 inauguration, and we are starting to see the outcomes of some of his campaign & election "promises".

Let's unpack the lies about what he has and has not delivered on. 

• In February, Attorney General Pam Bondi said of the the client list of well-connected sex-trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, "it is sitting on my desk right now." By March, the FBI seemed to be delaying the release of the list. When asked in March about the delay, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said "Everyone is working together as one unified team at the direction of President Trump. Any notion to the contrary is completely false."

FACT: The Department of Justice is now denying that any such list exists. When asked about plans to release the information, Trump said "are you still talking about Jeffrey Epstein? This guy's been talked about for years," inciting even dedicated MAGA supporters to question the actions of the Trump administration. 

• Trump campaigned heavily on the promise of improving the economy and lowering costs for consumers. “Prices will come down. You just watch: They’ll come down, and they’ll come down fast, not only with insurance, with everything,” he said at a North Carolina campaign rally in August 2024. 

FACT: Trump's '90 Deals in 90 Days' declaration (which rings eerily of deal-making behind the scenes of 'The Celebrity Apprentice') is not only unobtainable; it has the potential to increase prices on consumer goods by at least 25% - 40% for even the smallest of the US trading partners. His tariff threats on 22 different countries would raise the prices of goods from those nations for American consumers, if they do not come to an agreement with Trump by his newly created August 1st deadline. 

• An article from the White House, published on March 4, 2025, is titled "President Trump is Protecting America’s Children." It cites Trump's dedication to "never stop fighting for [a child's] right to a healthy, productive upbringing and childhood."

FACT: Trump's Health and Human Services Secretary, RFK Jr., has been questioning the measles vaccine for years, with mixed messaging in recent months. New reports from the CDC show the highest rate of measles cases since 1992, with three deaths since January. Measles is most dangerous for children; two of the 2025 deaths were 'school-aged' kids.

Tragically, Trump's funding cuts to the National Weather Service (NWS) also likely contributed to the loss of life, including 36 children, in Texas due to flooding. The NWS was forced to fire nearly 600 workers due to Trump's funding cuts, including the warning coordination meteorologist at the NWS's Austin/San Antonio office.

It is abundantly clear that Trump is not a man who keeps his promises, especially when those promises do not directly benefit him or his bank account.

#TrumpCheck - The Lies About the 'Big, Beautiful' Bill

Happy Wednesday, Democrats, and happy early 4th of July! Welcome back to our #TrumpCheck series, the LACDP's weekly newsletter that holds the Trump administration accountable for its lies, deception, self-serving actions, and crimes. 

Friday is the 4th of July, and as folks light the grill and set off fireworks, Capitol Hill is all aglow in anticipation. Since he came into office in January, Trump has been promoting a July 4th deadline for his 'Big Beautiful Bill'.  

Trump cannot seem to make up his mind about when he actually expects approval of the bill; he said on Tuesday that “I’d love to do July 4th, but I think it’s very hard to do July 4th,” Trump said, before adding that the goal is “somewhere around there.” In a Truth Social post the same day, Trump seems to advise legislators to "Keep it going, and be done before you and your family go on a July 4th vacation."

So, before we all go on our 'July 4th vacations' on Friday, let's unpack the truth of what is actually in the proposed budget reconciliation bill H.R.1 — 119th Congress (2025-2026).

• While facing criticism on how the spending bill will impact Medicaid coverage for Americans, Donald Trump said, "I have said it so many times, you shouldn't even be asking me that question.... read my lips, we aren't going to touch it."

FACT: The Congressional Budget Office (CBO), which performs nonpartisan budget analysis for Congress, has reported that nearly 12 million Americans would be left without insurance over the next 10 years if the bill passes. Rural hospitals would be hit harder than urban hospitals by the cuts to healthcare, co-pays would increase for doctor's visits for many, and legal immigrants would lose access to affordable coverage. 

• While on the campaign trail in August, VP Vance advocated for increasing the national child tax credit from $2,000 per child to $5,000 per child. "President Trump has been on the record for a long time supporting a bigger child tax credit, and I think you want it to apply to all American families."

FACT: The proposed bill, in fact, does the exact opposite; the current language lowers the child tax credit to its pre-2017 level of $1,000 per child. 

This ugly little bill takes millions of dollars away from families with children, to put it directly towards tax breaks for corporations and high-income households.  Vance easily abandoned his belief that it is the "task of our government to make it easier for young moms and dads to afford to have kids," as Vance was the tie-breaking vote in the Senate to take the bill to the House floor. 

• Trump has, for over ten years, campaigned on the promise of lowering the national debt, blaming budget deficits on Democrats. "I'm the king of debt. I’m great with debt. Nobody knows debt better than me," Trump said during an interview with CBS's Norah O'Donnell in the lead up to the 2016 election. "We’ve got to get rid of the $19 trillion in debt," Trump said during a 2016 interview with The Washington Post.

FACT: Trump seems to have completely changed his tune on the national debt. As tracked by the CBO, the "Big Beautiful Bill" would add $3.3 trillion to the national debt over the next 10 years. I guess being the 'king of debt' means he knows how to create it?

The federal government might be determined to attack everyday Americans with its budget plan, but Democrats are just as determined to stand up against these attacks.

Los Angeles County Democratic Party (LACDP) Chair Mark Ramos has released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court's Ruling on Nationwide Injunctions:

“Today’s ruling will create just another selective terror campaign.
Allowing this to continue in at least 28 states breeds further isolationism and anti-immigrant sentiment. I echo Justice Sotomayor in saying ‘No right is safe in the new legal regime the Court creates.’

We are a nation for and built by immigrants. Our diversity is our strength and not our weakness.

This administration is dangerously eroding the guaranteed rights and freedoms of our great nation. When nothing is left, will we still be great?”
